You have expertise in certain areas of business and you don’t want to let this go to waste. Maybe it is time to get yourself appointed director of a small or large company.
Steps
- Think about the industries you know most about.
- Investigate which companies are in this industry.
- Choose one to which you believe you have something to offer.
- Learn all you can about the company:
- Read the Annual Report if there is one.
- Read recent and not-so-recent news articles concerning every aspect of the company.
- Read a little bit about other companies competing with the company. Follow the industry as a whole.
- Find out who is already on the board of directors and then try to arrange a meeting with one of these people. Perhaps you know someone who knows someone who knows one of these people.
- Invite one of the directors out to lunch.
- Express your interest in serving on the board.
- Ask if there is anything this contact can do to help you in your quest.
Tips
- The more you know before beginning to contact people, the better. You want to put yourself in a position where it becomes obvious that you are the right person for the job.
- Spend a fair amount of time thinking about just what it is that you have to offer to this company. Be sure to let your contact(s) know how you can be of service and what unique talents you can bring to the table.
